It has been almost two months since I ran the Lakefront 50.
I have had two months to process my feelings regarding race day and the season
as a whole. Please note that this might be long, but I truly hope you read it.

This season was such an incredible journey. When I stepped
out in faith to set two big goals, I was scared. I was constantly second
guessing my ability to train my body for 50 miles, and I often feared people
would laugh or scoff when they heard I was trying to raise $20,000. As always,
God put people in my life to reassure me that this was what I was supposed to
be doing in 2017.

Early on in my fundraising, family friends committed to
donating each month to my page. This jumpstarted my belief we could all change
a lot of lives together. For my birthday in April, I had numerous people help
me run and come to my birthday party fundraiser. These two events helped me
believe that raising at least $10,000 was possible for the third year in a row.

A huge fear of mine didn’t have anything to do with race day.
I was simply doubtful I had it in me to actually train properly for a 50 mile
race. I kept looking at different race training plans, and I truly believed
there was no way my body would allow me to log that many miles. Plus, how in
the world would I even find that much time to train?

Thankfully I have incredible friends who also dream big and
have hearts for Africa. As I watched friends train for IronMan, I slowly
convinced myself I could do the same. When I read about people running the
Longest Day Marathon, I was inspired to keep going. Facebook can actually be a pretty motivating platform
<span style="font-family: "wingdings"; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">JAs I helped lead the
Blaine Group Run, I realized that I could follow my own advice. One run at a
time.

I also have friends who were willing to give up their own
time to help me train. My friend Jen wasn’t even training for a race, but she
ran with me almost every Sunday morning so that I could always have company on
my back to back weekend runs. My friend Holly woke up bright and early many
times so that I could beat the heat or the rain during my long weekday runs. I
had an entire entourage when I completed my 31 mile training run. Plus, that day alone, friends and family
donated almost $1500!!! I seriously have the best people in my life.

The Twin Cities Marathon was another definite destination on
my journey, and it is a day I won’t forget. Simply running to run without any
goal in mind was fantastic. I loved being with Amy, and we even survived the
HORRIBLE weather. My hamstring injury was there, but it wasn’t bad. The best
way I can describe it is by simply saying my hamstring was saying hi. It wasn’t
overly painful, it was just noticeable. When I woke up the next day with only
hamstring pain and zero soreness in any other muscle, I felt confident that I
could truly run a 50 mile race.

And this is where my story took a slight turn. When I woke
up from the Twin Cities marathon without added soreness, I was stoked. For the first time
ever, I could walk up and down stairs without a problem post marathon. To be
honest, I could have used a dose of humility, as I was pretty proud of this. I
should have also been smart and taken time off. Instead, I ran full out on that
Tuesday. I felt great during the run and was once again a bit too proud. The
next day, my hamstring wasn’t happy.

For the remaining couple of weeks, I dealt with a nagging
hamstring. I never felt the need to take any time off to rest, but I did cut a
few runs a couple miles short. In retrospect, I should have taken extra time
right after TCM to let my body heal properly. I didn’t, so race day fell apart.

Race Day was COLD. This did not make my already angry
hamstring any happier. I also had stomach issues that kept me visiting the
porta potty. By mile ten, I was doubting my ability to run 50 miles. If you
follow me on FB, you know that I almost quit after mile 25. Despite being on
track to finish with plenty of time at the halfway point, I knew it would be
rough, and I wasn’t sure I had it in me. But I kept going. Thanks to constant crying out to God,
perfectly timed prayers and donations from family and friends, and my older
brother, I crossed that finish line. It was ugly, and I was a blubbering mess,
but I did it.

If I am honest, I was rather angry on race day and for a
couple of weeks after the fact. I trained so hard for that day, and it was
disappointing to barely finish (if all had gone according to plam, I should
have finished at least an hour sooner and with at least some energy). I was in
so much pain that I could barely move. My hamstring was shot, my quad was super
swollen, and I had blisters all over both feet. I felt stupid for even trying.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized, it
wasn’t about me. Unfortunately, though, it had become about me. I was so
focused on accomplishing 50 miles that I forgot why I set that big goal in the
first place. I was so proud of being able to cross off mile after mile on my
training plan that I forgot to focus on the kiddos who needed me to advocate on
their behalf. In short, I made it about me, and that was my mistake.

I don’t necessarily believe God was punishing me on race
day, but I believe that race day happened the way it did for a reason. Being in
pain made me cry out to God in a way that has only happened one other time in
my life. Bleeding blisters made me admit that there was NO way I could do this
on my own. Barely finishing made me remember that I don’t do this for my benefit.
I do this so that others can have life. I do this as a way of honoring God. I
do this so that kiddos in Africa can feel the love of Jesus through my running
and fundraising. I choose to run so that others don’t have to.

And that my friends is the condensed (ha!) version of my
2017 journey <span style="font-family: "wingdings"; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J

As many know, I am training to become an #ultramom while simultaneously attempting to raise a family lifetime total of $50,000 for Team World Vision. My race isn't until October, but training is well underway. In fact, for the month of April, I ran 146.65 miles. This is actually a record for me...it is the most amount of miles I have ever logged in one month. Ever. And that number will only keep climbing.

Training is tricky. I am already running more miles than I normally do towards the end of marathon training season, and I am technically still in Base Training. It's mind boggling to think that my numbers are simply going to keep climbing. My legs are tired, and sometimes I just want to give up. Yet, my heart is so full. My boys are seeing me train for something HARD, and my friends and family are rallying behind me to help change lives. So let's be honest, the 24 hours I spent running this month were tiring and hard but TOTALLY WORTH IT! There were 720 total hours in the month of April. Calculating this out put my running in perspective for me. Scheduling time to run is hard, but it is completely doable when you get creative. Sometimes I have to get up early; other days I have to stay up late to finish work because I ran in the middle of the day, but when I am reminded of the kiddos who walk hours and hours EVERY day to fetch water, it makes my creative planning and sacrifices worth it. I am also fortunate that my kiddos can log a couple of miles with me every now and then. Our conversations are pretty fantastic during our runs, and nothing else competes for my attention when our feet hit the pavement together. It's pretty amazing actually.

Since I am in the habit of running back to back long runs, I decided I wanted to push myself a bit for my birthday. I am not going to lie, it was a struggle to come up with what to do that matched my birthday numbers in some way. I didn't want to run 35 miles because I was afraid to mess with training too much and wind up hurt, but I also wanted to do something more than what was planned for that weekend. I wanted to get friends and family out with me to help me log miles, and I hoped that people would donate to encourage me along the way. Since my birthday is on the 23rd, I settled for a 23K...back to back. This would be ten more miles than I needed to run that weekend (according to my training plan), so it would be difficult, but I trusted it wouldn't cause in injury. So my birthday weekend was born. I threw in a taco party for good measure, and my heart was bursting just thinking about it.

The amount of cheese I ate that weekend is just not even close to being good for you, but it was so much fun hanging out at my house and stuffing my face. In the end, I actually ran 50K that weekend. I overshot the second run, so I knew I was fairly close to the 50K when I finished. Kelsey suggest I tell the world of Facebook what happened. I followed her lead and challenged my friends to donate extra. I promised to go back out if two more people gained access to clean water. Sure enough, less than 5 minutes later, I was back out because three people jumped in to donate. I seriously have the best support system (and friends who like to torture me while simultaneously saving lives!).

So many people supported me on this journey, and I am continually grateful. This is my 7th year with Team World Vision, and I am constantly amazed at the number of people who continually donate on my behalf. I get a text alert every time someone donates, and my face lights up EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. It doesn't matter the amount. Donations mean that lives are changing, but they also mean that family and friends are by my side on this journey to solving the clean water crisis through World Vision.
Dear Grayson,

Today you turn 8 years old. Eight years ago, you were placed in my arms, and our family of four became complete. You are growing up so incredibly fast, but thankfully your little body is tinier than most your age. You likely want to be bigger, but I love that you still fit perfectly in my arms.

At 45 pounds, you weigh what your little brother did at 5 years old. But man, you can pack some punch into that little body of yours. Your muscles are strong, and your legs are fast. You can run an 8 minute mile, and I think one day you could give Ninja Warrior a run for their money :)

Math is still your thing. You ask Griffin and me to make up math problems for you ALL. THE. TIME. When you finish tests early at school, your teacher often finds you doubling numbers over and over and over again. You talk often about how you want to be a math teacher or an engineer when you grow up, and your Lego Building Skills are on point.

This summer you will be participating in Summer Academy, a three week learning experience for high achieving students. You are SO SO SO excited to go that you ask constantly how many more days until it starts. You decided not to go back to Trout Lake Camp this year. I think you are a homebody like your father.

You also LOVE Board Games. You love to play Monopoly, Mastermind, Sleeping Queens, and Guesturres. I am simply waiting for the day you fall in love with Pictionary :)

You still play tennis, and you were stoked to find out you moved up to the next level for the final spring session. Again, you are always the smallest one on the court, but you can hustle!!! You and Griffin talk often about being doubles partners when you grow up. I would LOVE that :) Speaking of Griffin, the two of you have an incredible bond. It is truly a blessing to watch the two of you together.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727066522550174522noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3304134203902808828.post-20221495779660689982017-03-17T10:28:00.002-07:002017-03-17T10:40:35.034-07:0050 for 50. YES, I am crazy.

2017 is going to be different. 2017 is going to be HARD. 2017 is stretching me in ways I never anticipated. But by golly, 2017 has me joining a new church, finishing out my first year as a professor, and it WILL have me crossing the finish line of 50 miles and $50,000.

Almost seven years ago, I signed up to run my first half marathon. Almost four years ago, I signed up to run my first full marathon. Two and a half years ago I declared I would NEVER run an ultramarathon. But Here I am. I have set a goal to run 50 miles and raise a lifetime total of $50,000 for Team World Vision. So what does "Here I am" look like for me this year?

I can't lie to you. I am SCARED OUT OF MY MIND. I am a fairly confident person, and I tend to set big goals. But this one scares me. I am still in base training, and I am already running more than 100 miles a month. I am reading about stretching, fueling, shoes, etc., and these are subjects I thought I already mastered. My legs are constantly sore, and my body is tired. Declaring that the Twin Cities Marathon will be a training run makes this sound impossible. Fundraising is awkward, and it's humbling to continue to ask people to donate their time and their resources. But my heart is full. I am continuing to spread the love of Jesus, and my boys continue to learn that we can ALL do hard things. I also have AMAZING friends and family who are rallying behind me in any way they can. I have running partners, financial supporters, people who simply encourage me with words/cards/emails, and a husband who comes alongside me in any way he can. God continues to remind me that I am NOT on this journey alone, and we go farther together. I am scared. I am tired. But Here I am.

So many people shake their head in disbelief when they find out I am training to run my first ultra marathon (50 miles). I get it. Running 50 miles can seem crazy. But that's not the point. The point is that I have legs that work and a heart for Jesus. God is continuing to remind me that I am a daughter of THE KING, and my story matters. What I do with my story matters. Running 50 miles isn't crazy. Rasing $50,000 isn't crazy. What is crazy is that there are kids in Africa who die because they don't have access to clean water.

God constantly invites us to join Him. So Here I am. Running more miles than I ever imagined I would. It's hard. Sometimes it downright sucks. But I am doing it. I serve an incredible God who gave me the ability to do big things in His name. So when I hear people tell me I am crazy, it simply fuels my fire. Because I am crazy. Crazy about Jesus. Crazy about clean water. Because Water is Life. And EVERYone deserves a chance at life.

At ten, Griffin still loves soccer, running, tennis, and more recently FOOTBALL!!! This man is in LOVE with the Packers, and I anticipate a full season of being glued to games on the tv. My hopes it to one day take him to a Packers Game, but for now we will cheer from home :)

At ten, Griffin has also set out to change the world. This year has brought us his TEN, TEN, TEN challenge, and so far it is going incredibly well. Tonight he will run a 10K on his birthday, and he gave up birthday presents in exchange for donations. His compassion for others is inspiring; I am blessed to share this TWV journey with him.

I don't want to believe it, but he is ten. He is a ten year old with an INCREDIBLE heart, a passion for all things sports, and a love for reading. He is a joy and a delight to parent, and I am incredibly lucky to be his mom.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727066522550174522noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3304134203902808828.post-2853470301921339642015-10-08T15:51:00.002-07:002015-10-08T15:51:54.591-07:00Twin Cities Marathon 2015I don't know if I can truly capture everything that transpired on Sunday, but I will try.

Most of you know I am a VERY competitive person. I compete against others, but I mostly compete against myself. I think this is why I like running so much. I rarely win a race, but I can continually beat myself and PR. With that being said, when I agreed to launch an EBC Team at SLP and host a group run, God made it abundantly clear that this racing season could not be about me.

And that was hard. Really hard. Who wants to train for 26.2 miles and not attempt to PR? Not me. But over and over again, God broke my competitive heart. Through prayer, He reminded me over and over again why I am part of Team World Vision, and slowly but surely, it became easier to let go of my PR and focus on my team. To be fair, I had one relapse a week ago when I contemplated a PR, but then I cam to my senses. This team means the world to me, and it was my time to give back.

All season long I ran with whoever needed me on Saturdays, and I had the time of my life meeting new people and helping new runners do something they never thought possible. Time and time again I was blessed by THEIR stories. Their successes became more important than my own, and it was truly magical. Leading Team EBC has been one of my greatest joys.

Up until race week, I hadn't been nervous. But then the reality that I wouldn't be running with my big brother set in. Could I really run without him? What if I had a bad day? What if I couldn't find a TWV runner to run with that day? Thankfully Boyd agreed to run with me, and it made my nerves settle. I owe him big time. On Saturday night, I prayed over and over again. Use me God. Use me. Keep my eyes open. Help me be aware of others and not myself.

Sunday started off spectacularly. I woke up to a donation providing two kiddos clean water for life. Dawn Flint drove Jen, Scott, and me down to the start, so I didn't have to worry about parking. THANK YOU, DAWN! It was the first year I attended the pre-race church service, and I am SO VERY glad I went. Worship and Prayer...It was the perfect start to a race.
The start line was chaos. I tried finding Kelsey and my former athlete Katie, and I couldn't. I was with Jen and Scott, but Boyd was nowhere to be found. Panic set in, but thankfully he found us. PHEW! And off we went.

I told Boyd I wanted to have a good race, but I had no trouble slowing down. My goals were to have fun, spread TWV cheer, get a few donations, hug/hi five my spectators, and help other runners. And if possible, I wanted to be able to go back out after I finished to help bring in other runners. This was my weekly tradition during group runs, and I wanted to do it at the race itself. Off we went, and it was fairly uneventful. I rarely looked at my watch, and we just ran. I was LOVING the scenery because it was the first time I actually took the time to enjoy it. I saw friends and family along the course, and I stopped to hug or hi five every single one of them. Thank you Brandon, Christopher, Griffin, Grayson, Holly, Nikki, Anna, Missy, Isabel, Gwen, Melinda, Laura, Holly, Aaron, Linda, Catie, Kelsey, Tom, and Carol. Your presence meant the WORLD to me. I also received two donation while out on the course, and my heart was bursting. I was LOVING it. Really.
Around mile 8 or 9 we came upon Kaelyn. She did not look well. Immediately I heard God prompt me to slow down and stay. Her words told us we could take off, but her eyes said otherwise. I agreed to stay, and so did Boyd. *Side note. Boyd is a FAST runner. Slowing down to be with Kaelyn was really not that sacrificial for me (I only finished about 30 minutes slower than I did last year). But for Boyd, it was definitely a sacrifice. He is that awesome. And did I mention it was his birthday? I want to be him when I grow up :)
At mile 14ish, Steve Spear handed me the flag. I thought he would take it back, but he took off, so it was mine. I felt like I was carrying GOLD, people. My upper body was a bit sore on Monday and Tuesday, but thankfully it really wasn't that difficult to run with. But MAN, it was awesome. This team is made up of SO MANY INCREDIBLE PEOPLE, yet I got the honor of carrying that flag.
Crossing the finish line, three in a row like that, was simply incredible. There really are no words to describe how amazing it felt to cross together. It was even cooler to hear that the announcer didn't announce our names (which they typically do). Instead, he announced us as "Here comes Team World Vision." And that was it. No names. We were a team. A team of individuals serving an incredible God. A team of individuals doing what we can to solve the clean water crisis.

After we crossed, I discovered my family was at the finish. This had not been the plan, so it was a total shocker. My family didn't make it to the finish line the last two years, so I was completely emotional knowing they watched me cross for the first time.

Boyd and I quickly ate, drank some coffee, and went back out on the course. As each remaining member of our team came through, we had the honor of running them to the cathedral and almost to the finishing shoot. I got to witness person after person take the ordinary and turn it in to the extraordinary, and I will never forget it. Thank you Mike, Amber, Andy, Monique, Steph, Jamieson, Molly, Tammy, Dan, and many others I don't even know for allowing me to be a part of YOUR journey.
There is so much beauty in doing life together. And that's what we do at Team World Vision. We do life together. Here in MN and in Africa.
I am upstairs because I can't concentrate. I am simply at a loss for words, and if you know me, you know that doesn't happen often. Words are sort of my specialty. But right now, words are not enough for the emotions bubbling inside of me.

We did it. Through faith, prayer, family, and friends, I officially reached my $10,000 goal for 2015. In fact, I went over it. As of today, my fundraising page sits at $10,315, and I don't even know what to say.

But I am going to try.

Back in February, I decided to set a $5,000 goal. At the time, $5,000 seemed IMPOSSIBLE. Last year I raised $3,475, so going for a higher amount felt unattainable. But, I publicly announced $5,000 was my goal, and I was determined to do it. Then I went to Chicago for a conference with TWV leaders from across the country. It was there that God placed it upon my heart to change my goal to $10,000.

I didn't change it at first. I was scared. What would people say? Would people continue to donate year after year? Wasn't $5,000 enough of a goal? Would I really be "that" person and continually ask people for money. When I went back to school that Monday, I talked to one of my closest friends, Holly, about it. I was totally scared about how she would react, but she simply told me I should do it. Same thing happened when I told my friend Missy. So, I listened to the nudge from God, and I set a God-Sized Goal.

Slowly but surely, I received support from people left and right. Josh and Eric agreed to put on my benefit concert, and it was a smashing success. But even when I reached numbers I had never seen before, I doubted. Just LAST week, I was frustrated because I couldn't see how I would ever get from $7,000 to $10,000. Just last week I talked with Sinead about how I felt stuck. She told me to pray. And I did. I turned to the One who created the heavens and the earth. I asked Him to provide me with more fundraising ideas. I prayed for Him to put names upon my heart to ask. I felt like I had already asked everyone, so I even prayed for names of people I could bravely ask again.

The next day, without ever even asking a single person, a friend who had already donated got his company to donate to my page. Then that evening, a different friend donated for the second time this year. Then an anonymous donor gave a hefty amount. I NEVER said a word to anyone about my prayers. God simply answered them. And in less than 24 hours, my fundraising page jumped a $1,000.

And then today happened. Today a different family donated for a second time. Their generosity alone will provide FORTY people with clean water for LIFE. And just like that, my God-Sized Dream is no longer a goal. It is a reality.

To my friends and family who have listened to me talk and talk and talk about Team World Vision, THANK YOU! To my friends and family who donated, THANK YOU! To my friends and family who have physically supported me on my runs in a variety of ways, THANK YOU! To my friends and family who have prayed for me along the way, THANK YOU! To my friends and family who simply believed in me, THANK YOU. Words will never be enough.

Jesus is alive and well my friends. He is alive and well. And with Him, all things are possible.
I have been pretending this day wouldn't come for weeks. Each birthday signifies that another year flew by, and I just have a hard time accepting that fact. How in the world are you going into 4th grade? Seriously, you were just born YESTERDAY!!!

Griffin, I write this post TO YOU because I know that soon enough you will be old enough to start reading this blog. You already enjoy the occasional scroll through my Facebook account, so it is only a matter of time before you start looking through this :)

It's hard to put into words how very proud I am of you. You are growing up to be more kind and compassionate than I ever hoped you to be. You love school, your brother, and anything that involves competition (wonder where you get that from?). You are more wise at 9 than most are at 30. And I am lucky to witness it.

Reading has been a passion of yours for a while, and this year has been no exception. You officially reread each Harry Potter book this year, and you are on Book 7 of How to Train Your Dragon. Sometimes I worry you read too fast, but you are always entertained :) Currently we are reading Wonder together; I am so blessed to be able to spend all summer with you, so we get to read it together often in the mornings. I am sad that we go back to school in just three weeks! Academically, you really took off this last year in math. Reading has always come naturally to you, but it appears that you might actually be better at math! This means Dad wants you to be an accountant, but somehow I know that is highly unlikely. Speaking of careers, you have oscillated between wanting to be a police officer and a teacher for quite some time. Recently, though, you announced that you want to work for Team World Vision when you are older. Dad and I agree that this is a perfect fit for you :)
This year you asked to go to Feed My Starving Children for your birthday party. How could we say no to that? So, next week, you will pack some meals with a few friends and have your VERY first sleepover! Technically we have had sleepovers with cousins and the Scalias, but this will be your first friends sleepover.

Tennis and running are still tied for #1 on your sports list, but you are going to play on your first soccer team this fall. I am not quite ready for anything that commits us to 3 days a week, but I really think you are going to love it. Running with you is still one of my all-time favorite activities. Now that you have your own GPS watch (birthday present this year), I can only imagine how much more competitive you are going to be with me! You have been staring at that watch since the moment you put it on :) You play football at recess, and you love the Green Bay Packers, but I don't see you playing any formal football soon.
One of my favorite things about being your mother is watching you take care of your little brother. The two of you can fight like the best of em', but at the end of the day, the two of you are the BEST of friends. You constantly have his back, and you often give something up to make him happy. This selfless love simply warms my soul.
I know I tell you this all the time, little man, but I am so very blessed to be your mommy. I cannot wait to see all that God has planned for your life. Dream Big. Be Bold. Love others.

I love you to the moon and back! Forever and a day.
been life changing for me. I started running with TWV in 2010. Had you asked me
about running long distances just a month prior to my commitment, I am pretty
sure I would have laughed in your face. Put simply, running wasn’t really my
thing. Sure, I ran on the treadmill, and I pushed my athletes to run during
practice, but it was simply a means to staying in shape. After having two kids,
it wasn’t anything :) But here I am, and running has invaded every area of my
life. But in a good way.

I am struggling to put this experience into a coherent story, so just
stay with me. My heart is so full, and I want the world to know it. But that picture above. That joy plastered across Griffin's face. Priceless. My chest practically bursts open every time I look at it.

On
March 22nd (World Water Day), I had the privilege of running a Virtual
6K with Griffin. The race was put on through Team World Vision, and
there were runners from EVERY state participating at one point or
another throughout the day. The distance, 6K, was chosen because this is
the average distance someone has to walk in order to access water
(mostly dirty) in Africa. The $50 entry fee guaranteed that you would
provide one person clean water for life within 6-9 months.

It
is no secret that Team World Vision is near and dear to my heart. When I
started running with TWV back in 2010, I had NO IDEA how much this
organization would change my life physically, mentally, and spiritually.
I had no idea that I was stepping into an INCREDIBLE community of
people who are on fire for Jesus. I had no idea that I would become the
healthiest I have ever been, both inside and out. I had no idea I would become so passionate about something I HAD NEVER DONE BEFORE. I had no idea I would become determined to solve a problem I had never really thought about or comprehended. I had no idea that I would meet some of the most awe-inspiring people. My journey with Team
World Vision has been nothing short of amazing, and I was stoked to
finally share this community with Griffin.

It didn't
take long for Griffin to want to run like me. In 2012, he ran his first
5K, and he was hooked. From that day forward, he has been asking all
about when HE gets to run with Team World Vision. TWV typically does
endurance races, so being that he was five at the time, I knew it would
be quite some time before I allowed him to train for a half or a full
marathon. But, this year, that all changed with the creation of the 6K.

Griffin
was on board with running this race IMMEDIATELY, and one of the first
things he said was, "Now I get to help provide people with clean water."
Despite the fact that he is VERY new to typing, he took the time to
email family and friends inviting them to cheer him on and donate on his
behalf. He even talked to a few people in person. He was set on
accomplishing a goal....which leads me to another story :)

I
learned through this process that God is bigger than I give Him credit
for, and Griffin's heart of servitude is capable of accomplishing more
than I can ever imagine. When I originally asked Griffin if he had a
fundraising goal a couple of weeks ago, he told me that he wanted to
raise $800 because he is 8. I quickly let him know that his goal was
rather large, so he changed it to $400 because that meant 8 people would
gain access to clean water. "You know, cause I am 8." So, that became
his goal. Well, by race day, family and friends had donated over $800 in
honor of Griffin's race. God honored the desires of Griffin's heart. Not
the goal of my choosing. Through others' generosity, He honored
Griffin's original goal. HOW AMAZING IS THAT? We serve an amazing God.

You
guys, I can't even begin to describe how truly AWESOME Sunday was. I
have completed two full marathons and have fundraised a lot of money
thanks to the generosity of others, so I know what it is like to be full
of emotions at the start and end of a race. But nothing prepared me for
the joy and pride I experienced doing this with my eight year old son.
My little man ran 3.78 miles in just over 35 minutes. He had 17 people
show up to cheer him on (a few even ran with us) and celebrate even
though it was COLD. Not only did I get to share my love of TWV with
Griffin, we got to once again experience the love and support of some of
our closest friends and family members. Words of encouragement were
constant, and smiles were plentiful. Griffin prayed for support, and now
19 people will have clean water for life because of his desire to help
change the world.
I am determined to help
solve the clean water crisis in my lifetime folks, and I am so honored
that so many of you have joined me (and Griffin) on that journey. It is hard, at times, to reflect about things that don't affect your day to day life. But TWV has helped me think outside of my little MN life, and I am beyond grateful for the support I have received thus far. To
those of you that sponsored Griffin, cheered him on, or have sponsored
me (through financial giving and/or running support) in the past, words
of gratitude are not enough. Actions speak louder than words, and I am
surrounded by people who act in such a way that gives me SO MUCH HOPE
for the future. Thank you. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727066522550174522noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3304134203902808828.post-43264543252023277572015-03-18T05:21:00.000-07:002015-03-18T05:21:00.638-07:00Happy 6th Birthday, Grayson!

Today we celebrate Grayson's 6th Birthday. While I occasionally worry about the size of my tiny man who packs a lot of energy in his 37 pound body, I absolutely LOVE that he is small for his age. I just bought a pair of 4T pants (which are slightly big) for my six year old, but I am perfectly okay with that. All it means is that I get to pretend he isn't growing up so fast :)

His enthusiastic smile from the picture above really says it all. Grayson has more energy than most people I know combined, but his enthusiasm for life is truly contagious. He gets excited about the littlest things, and he often makes me reflect upon what truly matters in life. It doesn't take much to make him smile, and pretty soon we all have smiles on our faces.

If I am honest, I worried about Grayson starting school this year. A LOT. He doesn't do well with sitting still, and I worried school would be a disaster. Thankfully it has been the complete opposite. According to his teacher, he is a joy to work with and is uber respectful. We even found out that he has started working with an intervention specialist because he is ahead of where he needs to be academically. I am thankful they have already identified this in him because I believe this will decrease his chances of becoming bored with school. I am pretty sure he might get away with a few things because he has most of the women in his building charmed by his smile, but hey, he is liking school and learning. I'm not sure I can ask for much else.

Tennis continues to be his sport of choice, and he told me last week that he doesn't want to play soccer again this summer. I imagine he might change his mind when he watches his brother play, but I refuse to sign him up for something he doesn't want to do. Last month he ran his first bigger (and longer) race at the U of M, and he loved it. Griffin has always loved to run with me, but Grayson is hit or miss. However, it appears he might have been bitten by the running bug, so I foresee more running in his future. For now, he is more than content playing outside and taking tennis lessons at the PIT. He is also very much looking forward to PlayNet this summer.

I love being able to play a full game with both of my boys! I think Connect Four might be his favorite, but a close second is HANG MAN! Now that he can read and spell, he wants to play this always. His words started out pretty simple when we began playing in January, and it has been pretty awesome watching his choices become more and more challenging as he learns bigger words.

Speaking of summer, Grayson does NOT LIKE WINTER. I have always known that winter wasn't his favorite, but just the other day he said, "Mom, I would be SO happy if winter was only for one day." Me too, little man. Me too

.

Despite being rather small for his age, we have been super pleased with his eating this year. Legally, school has to provide Grayson a Gluten Free lunch option because of his diagnosis. I was pretty nervous about this because Grayson is definitely picky. Well, he has tried many new things this year, and he LIKES them :) He actually eats breakfast and lunch at school, and he prefers school meals to the ones we send. (This is not shocking considering my lack of cooking skills!) But let's be honest; I don't mind. It's less work for Brandon and me in the mornings.

Happy Happy Birthday little man! I can't imagine life without you and your compassionate heart. I am so excited for what God has in store for you this year!

While we celebrate
Grayson's half birthday, Griffin REALLY cares about his half birthday.
Because he doesn't get to celebrate his real birthday at school, he
brings in treats to school on his half birthday, and we also got a bundt
cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes.

I always like to write
up a post on the kiddos' half birthdays because I like to keep record
of what they are doing and loving at that given time. It is fun to see
both boys grow up and develop their little personalities.

Griffin
began playing tennis two days a week this winter (it will go back to
one day a week when he begins soccer), and he is still LOVING it. We are
so lucky to have the PIT so close to our house, and Dave and Dan are
amazing coaches. While they shorten the court a bit, Griffin has begun
to play actual games (not full matches) at most lessons...serves and
all.

School has been interesting for Griffin this year.
He LOVES reading and learning, but it is very obvious that he misses
his teacher from last year, and he hasn't quite clicked with his 3rd
grade teacher in they way he has with other teachers. He continues to
excel in all subjects, but we often tell him to SLOW down. He would
rather finish any and all schoolwork quickly so that he can dive nose
first into Harry Potter :) He is now halfway through book seven, which
means he has almost read the entire series. TWICE.

Running
is still one of his passions, and I couldn't be happier. Well, I was a
tad jealous when he brought home his record of a 7:02 mile at school, but
I am ecstatic that he continues to enjoy one of my favorite activities.
His farthest run with me to date is 4 miles, and he will run a 6K on
March 22nd in honor of World Water Day.

His love of
running has spilled over into soccer, and we are currently exploring
soccer options this spring and summer. I don't know much about soccer,
but I imagine his speed will help him excel! Speaking of spring and
summer, we just signed Griffin up for a WHOLE WEEK of summer camp at
Trout Lake. I am TERRIFIED of sending my first born son away for a whole
week, but he is adamant that this will be the best week of his life.

One
of my favorite activities Griffin has started doing this year is being
my tech master when I teach at church. I LOVE volunteering with him, and
I love that he has a heart to follow God. He is the youngest person
that fulfills this role, and it is definitely a proud moment for me when
we finish teaching :)

It's hard to believe how quickly he is growing up. I swear I can remember when he was born like it was yesterday. It amazes me how mature Griffin is, and
I am constantly in awe over the questions he asks and his empathetic
nature. I am blessed to call him mine.
For about a year, Griffin has become more and more obsessed with football. He knows more about the game than I ever will, and Sundays have been devoted to watching too many games over the last year. He really doesn't have an interest in playing it, but he definitely enjoys cheering on the Packers!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727066522550174522noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3304134203902808828.post-6989239213041287512015-01-10T20:05:00.000-08:002015-01-29T20:05:56.781-08:00Welcome to the 1920's

Seven days since I embarked on the arduous (and crazy) task of running 26.2 miles for the second time. Seven days since I crossed the finish line in euphoria. Seven days since the 69th kiddo was sponsored. Seven days since I committed to a third. (Shocker.)

It's really hard to put last Sunday into words. Truly, the word euphoric has been thrown around quite a few times, but even that word doesn't quite do Sunday justice. I ran 26.2 miles. And I enjoyed it. Seriously, how do those words even fit into the same sentence? But here's why.

This whole training season was such an incredible experience. While there was always a little bit of trepidation about 26.2 miles, my level of fear this time around was NOTHING compared to last year. And with a lack of fear comes enjoyment. Enjoying the process. Enjoying the exhaustion. Enjoying the pain. Isn't that how life is? When we take away fear, enjoyment tends to come a little easier. I trusted that God made me a part of Team World Vision for a reason. I began looking forward to Saturday mornings. While I started to dread my long runs during the week, I NEVER stopped loving those long weekend runs with my teammates. I trusted that I could do hard things. I trusted that God would work in the hearts of me, my family, and my friends to meet the needs of people who are desperate for clean water. I trusted my journey.

The generosity of my family and friends was UNBELIEVABLE this year! $3,475 later, 69 people will now have clean water. 69 people will now have new lives. EVERY time I was alerted of a donation a smile would appear on my face. I felt so supported, and I was stoked that my family and friends were helping me change the world.

And then I had a freak out moment when my training partner got injured. I was obviously devastated for Scott. He had trained so hard all season, and for a few days he wasn't even sure he could attempt running. But selfishly, I was also devastated for me. Both of us pace the same, and we had agreed to do a walk/run combination during the last month of our training. What was I going to do? I prayed over and over that week for God to heal Scott and for my anxiety over possibly running alone to diminish.

Well, thankfully God orchestrated another plan through my brother, aka Eric, and Elise. I hadn't run too many times with Elise prior to race day, but during our 20 mile training run she ran with Scott and me and attempted the walk/run combination. She agreed to run that way on race day. To be honest, I wasn't thoroughly convinced she would want to stick with me during the whole race, so I voiced my concern to my older brother.

Both came through for me on October 5th. While Scott, Newton, Elise, Andrew, and I started out together, Newton and Scott took off early in the race. As a result, Elise, Andrew and I set off together looking out for one another. I couldn't have asked for a better race. First, knowing my brother had my back made the WORLD of difference for my confidence levels. When I learned he would run with me that day, I was beyond excited. Despite having a sore Achilles from the moment I crossed the starting line, my fear began to dissipate knowing my brother would do everything in his power to get me to that finish line. Andrew appealed to that competitive side in me, and Elise appealed to my emotional and spiritual side. Praying with her on the course was an incredible experience I will never forget. Her Team World Vision Jersey also brought a smile to my face many times. I often heard strangers call her name or cheer for Team World Vision, and in return, I rationalized they were also cheering for me :)

And then there were my spectators. Every few miles I was blessed with seeing a familiar face. EVERY one of my siblings came to support me. Christopher, Le'Dean, and Jeff (along with Henry and Ella) joined Brandon, Griffin, Grayson, and Samuel and cheered us on at multiple locations. I loved hugging my family members! Holly, Anny, and Gwen saw me FOUR times on the course. My friend Holly O. came out around mile ten. Scott's family cheered me on multiple times, and so did a large group of other Team World Vision supporters. Brent and Kiley were somewhere around mile 13. My friend Becca saw me at three different spots. The Flint Family and the Bostrom Family helped me conquer Summit. Kelsey joined the rest of the family on Summit, and my friend Amy walked back after her 10 mile race to cheer me on close to the finish line. I can't even begin to describe how important spectators are during a race. Seeing family and friends simply makes the race go by that much faster. Every time I saw someone I knew, I would get this little burst of energy that prompted me to push my limits even more.

Last year I was so delirious by the time I reached Summit that I contemplated quitting many times. I was so out of it that I didn't even see the Cathedral. That big beautiful church right before mile 26. Nope. Didn't see it. This year, my fastes splits were at the END of the race. I didn't contemplate quitting once. And you better believe I started looking for the Cathedral around mile 25 :) While I did begin to fade towards the end, Andrew knew that I had a time goal, and he knew exactly how to get me there. He slowly inched in front of me knowing I would do my best to stay on his heels. When we reached the Cathedral, Elise took off like the Rockstar that she is, and my brother kept me going. We crossed the finish line with my exact goal time--9:45/mile. Prior to the race, Andrew asked if I would run another marathon. I told him I didn't know if I would. Half marathons were looking mighty appealing. Steps after we crossed the finish line of the Twin Cities Marathon, I turned to him and said I would run again :)
If you have ever thought (even for a moment) about running a half or full marathon, DO IT! My time with Team World Vision has been LIFE CHANGING! I am healthier and happier, and I am passionate about bringing that health and happiness across the globe. If running isn't your thing, there are many ways to be involved with TWV. You can click HERE
to donate money for clean water. $50 literally changes a life. We also
LOVE volunteers who help us out on training runs and race day. Get
involved. I promise you won't regret it!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727066522550174522noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3304134203902808828.post-56973485784341599602014-09-28T18:48:00.005-07:002014-09-28T18:48:56.436-07:00Final Pre-Race UpdateT-7 Days!

First off, THANK you for bearing with me as I
continually post, fill your inbox, and flood your Facebook page with updates
about Team World Vision. I could not have made it through 17+ weeks of
training without your encouragement and support. This will be my final
pre-race update! I promise to only fill your inbox one last
time post-race...this year anyway :)

Second, I still need your
help to get to race day. My achilles is still not 100%, so I covet your
prayers. What's worse, my closest teammate, Scott, is also injured. He
took a nasty fall on Friday night, and at this moment, he is still not
sure he can even run on race day. If you could pray for physical and
mental healing, I would be forever grateful. To those of you already
praying, THANK YOU!

Third, I would love your support on race day
if possible. I have said it before, and I will say it again...the
spectators last year really helped me cross the finish line. Seeing my
family and friends throughout the course was AMAZING. If you are in
town, I promise you will have fun. Cheering on runners might not sound
like fun, but trust me, it is. Even for non-runners. Make signs, bring
cow bells, yell loudly. It makes a difference. My goal is to keep a pace
of 9:45/mile if that helps you decide when and where to go :)

Fourth,
THANK YOU to those of you have already sponsored me financially. At
this moment, I have raise $2,985 dollars. That means that 59 people will
now have clean water FOR LIFE because of my family and friends. WE ARE
CHANGING THE WORLD, PEOPLE! LITERALLY!!! I am so honored and humbled. I
have been brought to tears many times during this fundraising journey.
Bono once said, "We can be the generation that no longer accepts that an accident of latitude and longitude determines whether a child lives or dies." I truly believe that now. Together we are solving the clean water crisis.

Fifth,
there is still time to support me! If you are willing and able, click
below to learn more about Team World Vision's impact and to donate to
TWV on my behalf. THANK YOU!!!

http://www.teamworldvision.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.participant&participantID=1531

Thankful to do life with such wonderful people,
~SandraAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727066522550174522noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3304134203902808828.post-80617627693242725332014-09-18T18:13:00.000-07:002014-09-25T18:34:30.201-07:00Happy Half Birthday, Grayson!Today you are five and half years old. Unfortunately, this isn't good enough for you because you continually ask, "When will I be six?" In fact, when you were asked a few days after your fifth birthday how old you were, you replied, "I'm gonna be six!" I had to politely tell the asker that you would be six in 360 days. Basically, you always want to be your brother's age. This is difficult for me because as your mama, I want you to stay little for quite some time :)

Kindergarten is going well for you. You don't love school, but you definitely enjoy it. In fact, you think the WORLD of Mrs. Thate. Whatever she says, goes. I think I might ask her to tell you to eat more vegetables because I am pretty sure you would listen to her! I love getting updates about your day, and you are always VERY excited to show me what you worked on. If you see me throw away ANY of your work (even little worksheets), you get very angry at me. Just today you brought home a picture you drew of you swinging on a swing set. You were then asked to write sentence below describing what you drew. By no means did you have complete words, but I could actually read your sentence. It is fun to see that you are on the brink of reading and writing. Your world will become infinitely bigger when you can truly read! You get school lunch almost every day; the school provides you with a Gluten Free lunch each day, and you have enjoyed everything so far. You even tried peperoni for the first time, and now you ask for it at home.

You started soccer with Griffin this fall. You play on separate fields but at the same time. I don't see the joy on your face that I do during your tennis lessons, but you have fun running around and playing with the other kids. I enjoy that tire yourself out :) Mommy and Daddy love that you still enjoy tennis at the bubble as much as you do. I think it is safe to say we are officially a tennis family :) You also thoroughly enjoyed your time at Vertical Endeavors recently. Let's be honest, I think you like anything that involves movement.

Sleeping at night is going MUCH better. Because you no longer take naps during the day, you fall asleep quite easily at night. You still try and get out of your bed for a little bit (and we let you for a little bit), but none of this staying up 'till ten o'clock business anymore! You and your brother still share a room, and I am not sure if the two of you will ever sleep in separate rooms. You gab away each night, and it makes me smile.

Happy Half Birthday, my strong-willed child! Your energy and zeal for life is unmatched, and it is a joy to be your mommy. I love you to the moon and back...forever and a day.
Summer ending meant we no longer walked Pookie during the day. Our setup with this dog was perfect. The boys earned extra money...half of which they donated to World Vision...AND they learned to love dogs. Recently we visited a friend with a large Golden Retriever, and the boys were barely phased by him. WIN WIN!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727066522550174522noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3304134203902808828.post-89944931931416271112014-08-19T18:21:00.000-07:002014-09-07T18:21:30.900-07:00Wisconsin Dells 2014

The day you were born seems like it was yesterday, but here were are, and you are eight. Eight years ago you made us parents, and our lives changed for the better :) Eight seems way too old, but I am happy to report that you still like to cuddle. You won't hold my hand when we are in public, but you will still cuddle:)

At eight, I truly believe you are wise beyond your years. You are kind and considerate, and you often think about others before yourself. While you are definitely still a child in many ways, you continually amaze me with some of your grown up choices, questions, and actions. To be honest, you still teach me a thing or two about loving others.

Last year for your birthday, you asked for a Nintendo DS. We said no, but we told you that you could start saving up for one, and perhaps we would help pay for part of it around Christmas or your next birthday. You were set on saving up money, so you started to keep money you received for your birthday, holidays, and extra chores. Around Christmas, we convinced you that perhaps you should save up for an iPad mini instead. Slowly but surely your savings grew. It was hard to be at Target sometimes; you knew you had money to spend, but you also knew that you needed money to buy such a big ticket item. This was why I was so impressed with you a few weeks ago when you decided to donate half of your earnings from dog walking to World Vision. Had you kept your money, you would have reached your goal the first week of walking Pookie. However, the minute you realized you had enough money to provide a kiddo with water for life, you didn't hesitate. Like I said, I could learn a few things from you :)

I am pleased to tell the world that you are still continuing with running and tennis. Just today, we did both! Now that you are a bit older, I think that I will allow you to run a bit more than I have in the past. To date, your fasted mile was a 7:56, and you ran a fairly fast half mile today to win your kid's race. Tennis is the other love of your life, and you would play every day if we let you. Despite the fact that you are just turning eight, you continue to play with 9 and 10 year-olds, and you hold your own. After spending time in Fargo this summer, you have also decided to check out soccer. I think you will succeed at it because of your love of running, but who knows. You asked for soccer clothing for you birthday from family, so soccer will be a part of your life for at least a little bit. Daddy and I think you will be some sort of coach or trainer when you are older. You love doing T25, and earlier today you were running up and down our stairs to "get exercise!" You are still ridiculously competitive with anything you do, and it makes me smile!

We are currently reading the third Harry Potter book, and we hope to finish before you start THIRD grade!!! You haven't been as interested in reading this summer as you normally are, but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that we have had the BEST SUMMER EVER! We are rarely home and always on the go completing our 2014 Summer Bucket List. You still read more than most your age, you love to have reading dates at Barnes and Noble,
and you are grade levels ahead of your peers, so I am not worried. We did play Monopoly for the first time this summer, and at one point, we played three games in seven days! Did I clarify that they were FULL games!!! But you loved playing banker, and I loved that you were practicing math. You helped me set up my classroom this week, and you were VERY interested in how I run my room. Perhaps one day you will be a teacher!

One of my favorite things about being a mom is watching you and your brother play and interact. I am always amazed at how quickly you can push each other's buttons, but you truly care for one another. Just last week we were talking about your birthday and possible gifts, and you proceeded to tell me that I already gave you the best gift. I looked at you quizzically, and you replied, "Grayson." My heart melted. Seriously, it was like a scene from a movie.

Today is going to be a great day, little man! We look forward to crab legs (your request) and Mini bundt cakes, and I can't wait to spend time together just the two of us while Grayson is at preschool. I love celebrating the incredible kiddo you are!
